Ukraine has been enrolling students from other countries for many decades. Since 1946, Ukrainian universities have prepared about 250 thousand professionals from more than 160 countries. Applicants come from lots of countries in order to get education in Ukraine and each year the number of them increases. In 2000 about 20 thousand foreigners studied in the country, but in 2010 this figure increased and now it exceeds 44 thousand. With the number of foreign students Ukraine is among the top ten countries in the world. This is not surprising, because Ukraine has powerful scientific schools, provides high quality education and meets international standards. And the price for education is still lower than in many other countries. In addition, living expenses in the Ukrainian cities are low, and Ukrainians have the reputation of a tolerant nation, which is friendly to guests. Traditionally, the greatest flows of students come from Russia, the countries of the East and the Middle East. But the geography of the regions from which people come to study to Ukraine is much broader and covers 130 countries.
By the number of foreign students the largest Ukrainian cities are the leaders. The first two places are occupied by the city of Kharkiv, where 28 institutions of higher education have a license for training foreigners and the capital of Ukraine – Kiev – here are 41 educational establishments, which enroll foreigners. In these cities more than 17 thousand students from other countries are studying. In addition to Kiev and Kharkov, there are many other higher education institutions that have licenses for training foreign students, in Odessa – 18, Dnepropetrovsk – 16, and Donetsk – 11. The most attractive specialties for students from other countries are medicine, engineering, economics and finance, social sciences and linguistics.
The largest number of foreign students is studying in Lugansk State Medical University, Donetsk State Medical University, Kharkiv Karazin National University, Vinnitsa National Medical University, National Aviation University in Kiev. The following universities are also very popular among foreign students: National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”, Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University, National University of Pharmacy (Kharkiv), National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. Each of these universities has about a thousand and more foreign students.
Enrollment of foreign students in Ukrainian universities and institutes begins in summer and lasts until November. For foreigners, educational establishments allocate additional places. For the conclusion of the contract for training the future student must have a document of secondary education in his country. Every year the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine allocates about one thousand scholarships for foreigners under international treaties of Ukraine.
At many universities and colleges that enroll foreign students there are specialized preparatory departments. Education at the preparatory faculty usually lasts one year. Passing such a preparatory course is particularly relevant if you want to choose a program of studying in the Russian and Ukrainian languages and you have not enough knowledge of these languages. During the year the prospective student will be able to learn the Russian or Ukrainian language, both spoken and professional terminology, as well as to deepen the knowledge of the core subjects. Upon completion of the preparatory faculty graduates receive a certificate, which gives them the right to enter any educational institution of Ukraine upon the interview results on a contract basis. Passing such a preparatory course provides further successful studies, helps to adapt the future student to the new socio-cultural environment.
Citizens of other countries who have Ukrainian origin have the same rights for education as the citizens of Ukraine, upon admission to such specialties as pedagogy, the arts, humanities, journalism. They can enter the Ukrainian university or institute on a general basis, including education on full scholarship. To do this, they need to get a referral for training in Ukraine from national-cultural society in the country of residence. The citizens of the Ukraine, permanently residing abroad have the right to receive higher education in all public schools on a general basis.
